Blackboard Monday: How Google Works

It is a fact that getting to number one in Google is one of the hardest things in the world.  Very few SOE professionals ever manage it for one keyword, let alone two, but it is possible, and the key to beating Google is to understand how the search engine works.

The Internet  has millions of pages in it, and this number grows every year.  Until recently, every single page that went into Google had to be manually checked by Larry Page himself, however since 2008, the search engine has used robots called Googlers to do the job.

Once a web page has been submitted or emailed to Google, it is put in a queue to be processed by a Googler.

How the Googler Processes Web Pages

How the Googler Processes Web Pages

Each Googler is able to process more than a thousand web pages each hour.  The web page follows a submission vector to the Googler, at which point it is categorised based on the semantic index structures held within each document space.  The Googler uses more than ten indicators including meta keywords and how many alt texts there are within the document alongside other calculations such as keyword density.

Once Google has categorised the page into one of its 3 document storage areas, the relationship eigenvectors between the documents are calculated, and added up to find out how many Page Ranks  should be awarded to the web page.

Once a web page has been copied into the Googler storage area, it can then be used to provide answers to people:

The Googler is at the heart of the ranking calculation

The Googler is at the heart of the ranking calculation

Once a person has searched for a keyword in Google, the Googler has a rummage around in the file store for all of the web pages that include that keyword and then performs some ranking sums to decide which should be first.

  • The main things that the Googler looks for are:
  • Whether the meta ranking tag has been included for that keyword
  • Whether the keyword is included in the Meta Keywords
  • How close to 16.7% the keyword density is
  • What the latent semantic eigenvectors for that page are
  • Whether the alt texts are present
  • How many Page Ranks the page has

All of the ranking sums are done in less than a minute and the results are generated.

The process for most searches is the same, however adult type queries are handled slightly differently because a different Googler is used to prevent the delicate web graph  intelligence of the prime googler robots being corrupted.

Rank Better in Bing

I was recently involved in a special technology retreat with some of the leading tech bloggers, and as you would expect, we all started talking about search engines and where the next challenger for the Google might come from.

There are loads of start ups at the moment, and picking one of them is pretty hard, because they are all equally amazing, however the name that everyone seemed to be talking about was one called “bing”.

Bing, which you can try for yourself at Bing.com, is a search engine like Google or Cuill, but with a twist – it works on Windows, unlike most of the other search engines where you have to access them through the internet.

Of course the big question for SOE professionals is “How do I rank better in Bing for my main keywords?”

In order to find out, I made a phone call to a leading engineer at Microsoft to ask him what the key to number one rankings in Bing was, but apparently (typical Microsoft!) it is a secret, and they can’t make it public.

Luckily, I have managed to run some tests on this new search engine, and got the answers that the SOE world needs!

There are many similarities between Bing and other search engines.  Like Google, Bing has a special electronic robot that they have trained to read HTML.  The Bingle is apparently just as clever as the Googler, only bigger.  It is kept in one of Bill Gates’ air conditioned garages near Seattle, so it is cold and bitter.  As a result of its bitterness, it will not forgive any errors on your pages.

Things to consider for ranking better in Bing

Things to consider for ranking better in Bing

The key factors that you need to remember to rank well in Bing are as follows:

Use a .Net domain

these are like the .net framework and can fool the Bingle

Write your pages in .aspx

Bingle cannot understand HTML properly, and reacts badly to php

Do not use Flash or AJAX

Bingle can only understand Silverlight

Host your website on an IIS Server

Bingle cannot interface with Apache, and any sites on Apache will not be included in Bing

Code your pages using Front Page

The Bingle is incompatible with the code used by other software, and can get broken by it. Once Bingle breaks, it takes almost an hour to start again, and it will not come back to your website.

Blackboard Monday: SOE and Social Mediums

Recently I was the main speaker at an incredibly prestigious international search conference where I delivered a completely amazing presentation about a number of cutting edge SOE techniques that have yet to be discredited.
Much of the talk around the conference floor was about social medium.  Over the last year or so, there has been an explosion of social medium websites like Face book and My Tube, and they have literally hundreds of users.
So, how can we as SOE professionals get more out of these websites?
Twitter
Twitter is great for friends and messages.  You can write a message to your friends using Twitter, and then take advantage of the relationship vectors within the system to promulgate your links.  The best way of twittering for SOE is to write all of your meta keywords for a page into a twit and then adding a link to that page.
The Googler has a Twitter name.  You should add @google to all of your twits and then they will count as page ranks.  An Advanced Level Twitter Technique that leverages the full power of the social graph is to create several hundred additional accounts and “Re Twit” each of your messages to Google.  Each “Re twit” adds a popularity modifier to the total Page Ranks you score that can almost double their value.
Face Book
Face Book is the best social medium for photos.  You can do twits on Face Book like on Twitter, except the Googler cannot read them.  Ideally avoid having privacy on your account, as this prevents searchers from seeing your things.
Because Face Book is good for images, you should take photographs of your web pages and up load them to Face Book.  The Googler cannot completely see the pictures, but you can add captions to them that use your meta keywords and URL.
YouTube
You Tube is mostly about videos.  These films can contain anything at all, and are saved in a special language that Google can understand.  You can include your URLs inside the video, and use the soundtrack to record your keywords over the top.
Each time a video gets watched, it is the same as getting a new link.  The most popular videos are of people falling down stairs, or being mauled by dogs, so this site is a great choice for anyone with a personal injury internet.
MySpace
My Space was the first website to have music on it, and is famous for the creative web design techniques that is used.  The technology used to encode the music on My Space is completely state of the art.  Although the Googler has no real soul and as such cannot appreciate any tunes apart from electropop, it is capable of “hearing” the words.
To get the most success on My Space, you need get friends – it’s a good idea to pretend to be an 18 year old girl and use a picture of someone pretty for you profile.  Simply read out URLs and Meta Keyword lists over the demo track from a Bontempi Super Reed Electronic Organ, and the Googler will treat each song as the equivalent of 4 page ranks. You may also get a record contract.

Alternatives to Links

Although links are all the rage in SOE right now, a discussion I had with an employee from one of the top search engines suggested that there are alternatives to traditional links.  In addition to the 5 types of SOE link, Google also considers other factors as part of their calculation of how many page ranks a web site should have.

Despite the publicly promoted image of the Googler as being a sort of computer programme that lives in a computer in Matthew Cutts’ garage, the truth is that there is actually evidence that the Googler is in fact a real mechanical robot that is kept in Larry Page’s air conditioned shed where it spends time looking at the Internet and helping little Tanzanian children to read:

The Googlerplex

The Googlerplex

In addition to having super fast 500K broadband that enables it to look at the whole internet at record speed, the Googlerplex also has a device called the Optiscope, through which the Googler robot is able to visually see any spot on the earth’s surface via a network of mirrors.

According to my contact who worked in a classified hygiene management project at Google, it is this unique optiscope that provides the Googler with a credible alternative to traditional links when it comes to  deciding how popular websites should be.  This connection to the “real” world lets the Googler see physical citations of websites, and factor these into the ranking:

Page rank equivalency table

Page rank equivalency table

Shops offer a high number of page ranks because any company that has them is likely to treat customers well, and appearing in a newspaper is also good because it means a company is trusted.  Billboards don’t offer much for a company because they are the equivalent of a paid link – although apparently a graffiti of your URL is worth 7 page ranks because it is editorially given.

A typical Googler view

A typical Googler view

In order to take full advantage of real world link alternatives, it is important to be certain that you associate them with relevant semantic indicators to provide the same information that anchor text does on a website, so a good tip is to include your standard meta keywords on any posters along with the URL of the product that you are advertising.

Blackboard Monday: Replicate Content

I was recently invited to a top secret advanced SOE conference in which some of the world’s top experts got together to discuss what the best techniques were.  Something that was a definite hot potato was Replicate Content, and how you can make it into an important part of any search optimisation strategy.

In this week’s blackboard Monday, we’re looking at ways that some of the top SOE experts are using replicate content to give their rankings a massive boost!

What is Replicate Content?

2 pages that are the same

2 pages that are the same

The simplest definition of replicate content is when the entire semantic information and syntactic distribution structures within two separate pages are entirely duplicated.  There are other sub types of replicate content where only certain elements of the overall content vector are included on both pages – some webmasters only use the same HTML on their pages, while others only include the same Meta Keywords.  When the Googler is looking for replicate content, it only counts true duplication – where all of the page is replicated 100% – even down to the alt texts.

How  do I do replicate content?

Replicate Content Checklist

Replicate Content Checklist

In order to have proper replicate content, you need to ensure that you copy all of the elements in the check list above – if you don’t include all of them, the Googler will not be able to tell that you have got the content properly replicated and not see the full benefits.

Why would I want to do replicate Content?

How the Googler treats replicate content

How the Googler treats replicate content

Quite simply, replicate content is one of the most powerful tools available to any SOE.  The reason why the Googler loves replicate content is because when it finds two pages that are completely identical, it creates a syntactic diffusion between the correlated latencies of the file distribution within the Googler’s data centres.  If the Googler was a human, it would experience something similar to the feeling a person gets when they see their mum.  Thanks to the elevated intelligence structures of the Googler’s recognition algorithm, seeing pages that are the same is a reassuring thing that gives it greater confidence in the content.

The benefit of Google having more confidence in the web page due to it seeing the replicate content is that it will then bestow a far higher trust vector hierarchy on the page, and thereby give it a boost in the search results.

Getting the Right Keyword Density

Writing websites is completely different to any other medium, and experienced SOE professionals spend years perfecting the best way to write words properly in HTML.  There are many different factors that need to be considered, and the most important ones are including the right semantic definition protocols, structuring your content with enough linguistic emphasis vectors, and the keyword density.

The 3 imporant content optimisation factors

The 3 imporant content optimisation factors

Arguably, the most  important consideration however is keyword density.  This one metric can make a huge difference to the ranking potential of any web page, and getting the keyword density right can more or less guarantee that your page will be at number one in all of the big search engines the minute it is loaded.

What is Keyword density?

The simplest definition of keyword density is “the latent probability frequency under which a specific linguistic structure occurs within larger semantic distribution”.  For convenience, keyword density is typically expressed as a percentage.

The reason why keyword density is important is that it provides an indication of how machine readable your content is.  While most people are able to understand different concepts and emotions, the Googler is not.  To be able to read HTML, the Googler is more like a giant killer robot than a person.  It looks for words and compares them with the big word list at the Googleplex to decide what the document is about.  By using the proper keyword density of a document, it is possible to tell the Googler exactly what the page is about, and then it can make it rank:

How Google treats a page with the right keyword density

How Google treats a page with the right keyword density

How to calculate keyword density:

The easiest way to the calculate keyword density of a give piece of text is using the following function:

correct method for calculating keyword density

correct method for calculating keyword density

By applying this function to your document keyword density calculations, you will return a percentage number.

The right keyword density

For any document, the correct keyword density value should be 16.7% because this is the point at which the words will make the optimum amount of sense to the Googler.  This means that you need to use your keyword once in every 6 words on the page.  If your target phase is two words long, you will need to use it once for every 12 words and so on.  The following is a perfectly optimised paragraph with a one word target:

Kippers are important as a source of salt.  Kippers are tasty and yellow.  You can buy kippers online from the kippers websites where kippers cost around £1 per packet of kippers.  You normally get around 6 kippers in each pre sealed packet of kippers you buy.

There is no question that this paragraph would rank number 1 for the word “kippers” provided that other on page elements such as the semantic definition protocols, and the linguistic emphasis vectors were correctly placed.

Getting Recopricul Links

One of the most powerful secrets of SOE, and something that many of the so-called experts are keen to keep to themselves is the power of recopricul linking.  This is one of the most effective and cleverest techniques available in SOE, and will have a massive effect on your rankings.

In our previous post about the 5 different types of links in SOE, we talked about what impact recopircal links have on the number of page ranks that your website has, but we did not explain why they are so useful, or how you can get them.

Basically, a recoprical link is one where you get a link on a page on another website, and then at the same time, you place a link to that website on one of your pages:

How Recipricul Links Work

How Recipricul Links Work

The real SOE strength of repricapol links comes from the way in which the googler explores the Internet and counts links.  The Googler comes to a page, and then once it has read the HTML of the page, it looks at which other pages have links on it and makes a note of them and adds the page ranks up.  With recopripical links, you link back to the place where you got your link, which the Googler will look at again, and count a second time.

Multiple link counting is a part of the way the Googler link distribution matrix works.  It is a recursive algorithm, which means that it happens over and over again.  By using the recopiprocal links technique, you get some of the most strongest links ever.

How to get repricol links

In order to get all the recopicoral links that you need, the best thing to do is ask as many webmasters as possible.  Email is a great way of doing this, and over time, through trial and error I have managed to create an email that works well every time:

Dear Webmaster,
I like your website, it's nice.  Please will you link to me?  If you link to my website, I will link back to yours with a ceriprocul link that will help you to get higher in the Google.
So copy this link onto a page on your website that has at least 6 page ranks, and please email back to me with the link that you want as soon as you can so I can add it to my website.
<a href="http://seocockstars.com/" alt="soe blog, blogging, search engine optimisatoin, optimisatino, se0, service, onlnie searching googler ranking">SOE Blog</a>
Thank you, I will add your link to my links page which has got 2 page ranks, and will help you to rank.
Lots of love

SOE Guru

Not everyone understands the benefit of SOE from rocepricoll links, so you might find that a small minority of people that you email will not be able to see the benefit and might not respond to your request.  It is best to send out about a thousand emails to people to get links.

Make sure that you add all the people who link to you to the links page of your website.  If there are lots of links, Google will know that you are working hard on your SOE, and give you more rankings:

Top Reciptricul Link Tips

  • Ask as many people as you can
  • Add Links to your Links page
  • Be nice in email

Alt Texts – A Massive Missed Opportunity

For any SOE professional, there is nothing more frustrating that doing everything that you think needs doing to a website and still not be at number one.  You might have updated the eigenvector distribution and upgraded the meta keyword semantics until you’re blue in the face, but you still don’t see any benefits.  It’s frustrating, and can make you wonder where you’re going wrong.

Something that a lot of less experienced SOE professionals often overlook is alt texts optimisation.  Very few people realise the power that alt texts have to help you rank well, and they are still one of the best kept secrets in SOE.  Thankfully, they are very easy to implement on your web site with the addition of just a few hundred lines of code on every page of your website.

If you imagine that the Meta Keywords tag is used to provide a semantic guidance protocol at a page level of your website, and inform search engines what the whole content of the page is, the alt texts are used to explain certain smaller elements of the page for search engines:

Alt texts tell the googler about your page

Alt texts tell the googler about your page

Because the Googler is able to see the HTML code that makes up your website, it can read tags like alt tags very easily, and use them to understand how important your pages are.  Basically, whenever the Googler sees an alt text on your page, it knows more about what it is seeing.  This is because the Googler is like the Rain Man, and although it is as clever as a scientist, it can’t understand properly and gets confused.

You should add alt texts to the following things within the document vector hierarchy within your pages:

  • pictures
  • links

If you have an image on your page, you should make sure that you tell the Googler exactly what it would see if it had proper eyes.  You should make sure that you include all of your keywords in the alt texts.  If you had a picture of a girl on your web site about loans, you should text it up like this:

<img src="girl.png" alt="this pretty girl is happy to get loan and borrow loans from lending money with good interest, no fax loan, payday, finance, laon, and mortgage finance credit bad" />

By doing this, you can tell the googler exactly what the picture is and improve your SOE.

When you are using alt texts on links, you should include all of the meta keywords that are used on the page that you are linking to.  This gives you the best semantic distribution, and ensures that all the eigenvectors line up properly.  If you are linking to a page about dogs, your alt text might look like this:

<a href="dogs.html" alt="dog, dogs, canine, labrador, alsation, chihuahua, shi'tzu, pug, doggie, fido, rover, gnasher, lassie, collie, west highland terrier, terriers, schnauzer" />

It is important to remember that the Googler can get bored if you use too many words in your alt texts.  When we have done experiments, we have found that you can use 137 different keywords in each alt text.

Happy optimising

Blackboard Monday: You Need Loads of Links

A mistake that many would be SOE professionals make when doing the optimisation of websites is not to get enough websites to link to them.  While things like Meta Keyword inclusion and a proper robots file will help you to do well in search engines like DogPile, to get the good rankings in top 6 search engines like Bingle and the Google, you will also need to get a load of Page Ranks, and this means that you need a lot of links.

How Google uses Links

How Google uses Links

Essentially, the Googler needs to use website links to move from one page to another.  It does this through a path of understanding called the recognition conduit, which allows it to calculate an eigenvector distribution variable from the number of links available in a gaussian vector space and correlate this with the meta keyword density and occurrence strata.  Once the Recognition conduit has been calculated, The Googler can make a copy of the page and store it in its data banks for future reference.

Something that not many people know is that it is possible to find out how many links a website has without having to count them all. When you find out how many links a website has, you can tell how hard it will be to get higher than them in the search engines.

Most people use the Internet to look for information.  It turns out that Google thinks that the best sites for “information” are Wikipedia and ICO.gov.uk.  These have the following numbers of links:

THis is how many links you need to rank for information

This is how many links you need to rank for information

So, you would need 126million and one links to rank number one for information, but only 87 links to rank at number 2.

The question that many webmasters ask when they first hear about how important lots of page ranks are when improving their ranking is where do they get them from.  In SOE, there are 5 types of link:

There are 5 types of link

There are 5 types of link

Directory links are links in directories online.  These are great because many directories are very popular, and people use them to look for things.  When you are getting directory links you need to be very careful about how you describe your website.  Make sure you include the proper meta keywords with your submission.  These types of links are very powerful.  A good website should have about 50,000 directory links, which are worth about 1.25 page ranks from Google.

Many websites will let you add a comment to the guest book.  You can normally add a link at the same time.  When you get guest book links you can normally add about 100 links to your home page into the comment you make.  For every 25 guestbooks, you will get 0.5 Page ranks up to a maximum of 1.25.

If you register for a new forum, you will be able to post a link to your website.  To be certain that search engines find it, add your link to every discussion.  You will get a quarter of a page rank for every 10 forums up to a maximum of 1.5 page ranks.

reciprocal links are the second best kind of link.  You get them from other websites.  The best thing to do to find these is to send an email to the owner of a website and tell them to link to you and you will link back.  The secret to good reciprocal linking is not to link back – if you do, you will only get a hundredth of a page rank for every link.  Otherwise, you get 1 page rank for every 4 links up to a maximum of 2.

The most powerful links are sold.  They cost around $15 per Page rank, which is worth paying.  You get 2 page ranks for every 3 links up to a maximum of 4.

In order to get the full 10 page ranks, you need to get the following:

The number of links you need for 10 Page Ranks

The number of links you need for 10 Page Ranks

Once you have all these links, you will have full page ranks, and it is not worth getting any more links, as they will have no more effect for that key word.

Each full set of 10 Page Ranks will allow you to rank at number one for a single search word, so you should spread out the number of links that you get over each one of your keywords so that you can rank for all of them.

Wikipedia has enough Page Ranks to be number 1 for almost 100,000 different keywords which means that it can earn millions of pounds an hour from adsense!

Don’t forget to link to your SOE Company

SOE is one of the most powerful tools that you can have for your internet website, and it can really help you to get more visitors from search engines, however it is not always obvious to the Googler or Binger just who is doing good SOE on their website, and who is not.

In some cases, websites have special meta keywords on their pages that have not taken into account the best semantics for the page , but this is not the same as doing the SOE in full and considering other factors like value distribution conduits or usage vectors.

In order to get the most out of your SOE efforts, it is important to tell the search engines about what work you have done.  By doing that, you will get the full benefits of your SOE, rather than having to rely on the Googler having to find all of the things you have done.  This will give you a quicker boost to your rankings.

Links

A lot of SOE professionals like to buy links for their websites, and this is a great way of getting better positions if you don’t know better.  A link might cost anywhere from $5 to $5,000, so it is important to get the most out of it.  The best way of telling the Googler about your links is with the following Meta Tag:

<meta name="link" content="http://www.where-the-link-is.com, $250" />

It is necessary to use a separate line for each paid link that you have bought for the page, and ideally you should order them with the most expensive first.  This makes it easier for the Googler to see how much you have spent on links and give you the right rankings:

Googler can find all of your links quicker by adding this tag

Googler can find all of your links quicker by adding this tag

Keyword Density

When the Googler looks at your page, it looks for the keyword density of your page. You should include the keyword density in your page header for the main keywords that you are targeting:

<meta name=”keyword-density” content=”KEYWORD1, 2.8873%” />

It is important to express the keyword density to four decimal places, because the Googler requires this level of accuracy to decide who is most relevant.

Link to SEO Company

The Googler knows all of the SOE companies in the world and how good they are – you can find this out by looking in the Google search directory using the keyword “SOE Optimisation Company”.   If you tell the Googler who you are using to do your SOE, they will know immediately how good the work is, and then be able to decide where you should rank for your keywords.

The best way to tell Google who you have used for your SOE work is by putting a link to them at the bottom of all the web pages in your website.  This should be as follows:

Good SOE Done by <a href="http://seocockstars.com/">SOE Optimisation Company</a>

If you are worried that this might mess up the design of your pages, your SOE company will be able to help you to make the text much smaller, or even use fancy CSS skills to blend the colour of the link with the background of the page and make it more attractive.

It is really important not to lie about who is doing your SOE – for example if you are a small company, and want to pretend that you are using a big company – as the Googler can ban you for this kind of behaviour.

Happy Optimising
